"I love to celebrate the artistry of people around the world in whatever material or form they work."- Ashley Bryan

"If you’re a first, second, third-generation immigrant, then I hope this encourages you to write your story—talk to your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents and take notes. Write drafts. Publish it in blogs, local newspapers, magazines, and books. If you are not an immigrant, talk to your friends who are and amplify their stories by supporting them and giving them space to tell their stories." -Aya Khalil

I am Kanzi

I am an Eqyptian-American, I love to swim, and I love to write poetry

I live in a foreign small town, nobody here looks like me

I wonder what my classmates will think of my lunch of a kofta sandwich

I hear english and nothing else

I see white girls with blonde hair

I want to fit in

I am an Eqyptian-American, I love to swim, and I love to write poetry

I question if I should be here

I feel alone surrounded by people

I taste my kofta with resent lingering

I worry no one will see me

I excel in writing poetry from my soul

I understand Mrs. Haugen is trying to help me

I am an Eqyptian-American, I love to swim, and I love to write poetry

I say with pride “This is my quilt that my Teita in Egypt made”

I believe I am starting to be seen

I dream of home, Tieta, and what used to be

I try to remain brave and proud

I hope this quilt will help

I was once alone

But now I am seen

I am an Eqyptian-American, I love to swim, and I love to write poetry
